Most of what this app documents is ownership moving away from the people who do the work. Mayday Salon Cooperative in East Nashville is built the opposite way.
The Nashville Scene reported that "At Mayday, everyone shares in the labor and profits." The salon's own site describes a model that "offers ownership, profit sharing and provides stability and a voice to each member."
That is what a worker-owned cooperative means in practice: the people cutting hair are also the owners, so there is no outside investor, holding company or landlord-of-the-brand taking a cut off the top.
It opened in the past year, according to the Scene, and its founders came from a Nashville salon that had closed. In other words, the people who lost a workplace built one they would own.
It scores at the top of the scale for a reason. The question this app asks is who profits, and here the answer is the people in the chairs.
