Why we call it slop
J. Alexander's scores at the bottom on ownership: it was a Nashville-headquartered public company until September 2021, when SPB Hospitality, owned by funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group, acquired it.
Ownership read: Private Equity · Confidence: High
The Slop Score weighs ownership structure hardest: private-equity and roll-up ownership caps the score, while independent and family-run businesses with real neighborhood roots score higher. It is a read of who profits and how a place is financed, not a judgment of any individual and not a finding about a business's labor practices.
Slop Score ratings are our editorial opinion, based on our published methodology and public sources available at the time of review. They are not statements of fact about any business, and they may be revised as new information emerges. Spot an error? Request a correction.
Changed hands
J. Alexander's built its reputation as a polished, upscale casual restaurant company with Nashville as its home base, and it traded publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker JAX.
On September 30, 2021, SPB Hospitality announced it had completed its acquisition of J. Alexander's Holdings. Each share converted into $14.00 in cash, which the company said equated to an equity value of about $220 million, and the deal added 47 restaurants to SPB's portfolio.
The buyer is a name most diners will not recognize. SPB's own announcement says "Funds managed by affiliates of Fortress own SPB, which was created in 2020 to manage its growing portfolio of hospitality brands." Fortress Investment Group is a global investment manager.
For a customer, nothing at the West End location changed on the day of the sale. The change is in who the restaurant ultimately reports to, and where its profit goes.
It is one more example of the pattern this app is built to show: a homegrown brand that still feels local, owned through an investment vehicle a step or two removed from anyone you could meet in the dining room.
SPB Hospitality completed its acquisition of J. Alexander's in September 2021.
