Draper James is easy to read as a founder's passion project, and in one sense it is: Reese Witherspoon started the Southern lifestyle brand in 2015, and it still carries her name and voice, with a 12South shop in Nashville.
In September 2023, Consortium Brand Partners announced it had acquired a majority stake. Its announcement says it "will now hold approximately a 70% position of the company's ownership," and that "Reese Witherspoon will remain a partner and board member in the business."
Consortium is a private equity manager that buys and builds consumer brands. That is a different kind of owner than a founder, and it comes with a different clock: investors like this typically hold a company for a period of years and then sell.
