Why we call it slop

Tatte scores low on ownership: it looks like a neighborhood bakery, but it is majority owned by Act III Holdings, the investment firm of former Panera CEO Ron Shaich, and now has about 50 locations.

Ownership read: Private Equity · Confidence: High

The Slop Score weighs ownership structure hardest: private-equity and roll-up ownership caps the score, while independent and family-run businesses with real neighborhood roots score higher. It is a read of who profits and how a place is financed, not a judgment of any individual and not a finding about a business's labor practices.

Slop Score ratings are our editorial opinion, based on our published methodology and public sources available at the time of review. They are not statements of fact about any business, and they may be revised as new information emerges. Spot an error? Request a correction.

Look closer

Tatte and Life Alive look like two Boston favorites. One investment firm sits behind both.

Tatte began in 2007 as a bakery founded by Tzurit Or, and its shops read as neighborhood spots. Life Alive started in Lowell in 2004 and reads the same way.

Both now share an owner. Axios Boston reported that "The expansion comes under the guidance of Ron Shaich and his Act III Holdings investment firm," the firm of the former Panera Bread CEO. The Harvard Crimson reported that Shaich "bought a majority stake in Tatte Bakery & Cafe," and Boston.com reported that Life Alive "was bought by Act III Holdings, an investment firm run by Panera Bread and Au Bon Pain founder Ron Shaich."

Tatte now has around 50 locations, and Life Alive has opened a new Seaport cafe in 2026. Nothing about the food or the storefronts changed when the ownership did, which is exactly why the ownership is worth publishing.

It is not the only one. Blue Bottle, the coffee brand at the Prudential Center, is owned by Nestle, which announced in April 2026 that it was selling it to Centurium Capital. Insomnia Cookies is backed by Verlinvest and Mistral Equity Partners. Peet's belongs to Keurig Dr Pepper.

For contrast, Caffe Paradiso has been run by one North End family since 1962, and Weesh Bake Shop in Roslindale is a single bakery run by its owner. A shop that looks local and a shop that is locally owned are two different things, and this app is built to tell them apart.
